MONROE - Several area law enforcement agencies will participate in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" national campaign from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5.

Officials from Monroe Police and the Green County Sheriff's Department jointly announced they will take part in the event. Other participating agencies include New Glarus Police and Belleville Police.

"Too many people still make the irresponsible and dangerous decision to get behind the wheel while impaired," said Monroe Police Captain Jim Kosek, in a statement.

The campaign includes heightened patrols, observation and stepped-up enforcement of Wisconsin's drunk driving laws, police said in a release.

Last year in Wisconsin, 220 people were killed and more than 3,500 injured in nearly 5,800 alcohol-related traffic crashes.

As such, police say area officers take a zero-tolerance approach to enforcement of impaired driving laws.

The departments will be working in conjunction with Wisconsin's Department of Transportation's 2011 Mobilization Program.
