Otto Schild, 96, of Monroe died peacefully early Sunday morning, April 8, 2018 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born in Canton Bern, Switzerland on August 5, 1921, the son of Heinrich and Elizabeth (Imboden) Schild and came to America with his family in 1925.
He spent his youth in Green County where his parents farmed. He was a WWII veteran and served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. On August 26, 1944, Otto and Gladys E. Brecklin were married at St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe and were lifelong members and volunteers at St. John's. They raised a family and farmed in Green County for twelve years. Later Otto was a proud craftsmen self employed as a flooring contractor serving the Monroe area and sometimes far beyond.
Otto enjoyed Tuesday night bowling for over 45 years with many of the same team members throughout the years. Most often bowling was followed by a card game, another passion of Otto's. He was a good bowler with several trophies but an even better card player who enjoyed most locally played games. Otto and Gladys also belonged to a monthly card club for several decades and played cards weekly with their best friends.
He was active in American Legion Post 84, serving as a commander at both the local and the county level. Otto and Gladys volunteered and coordinated the Friday night fish fry and other events and fundraisers. Otto also helped as a 40 and 8 member and served as Chef de Gare of the Post Voiture 1121.
He was a good husband and father who enjoyed family gatherings, his 7 grand kids and 14 great grandchildren. Mom (Gladys) was the indoor cook and Otto (Dad) was the outdoor cook who enjoyed grilling meat while relaxing in a chair with a beer. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife visiting their children and seeing new places. Several years ago he participated in a veterans' trip to Washington DC., with Badger Honor Flight.
Otto is survived by Gladys, his wife of 73 years, sons, Jim, Janesville, Tom (Melanie), Germantown TN, son, Ken, Dunedin, FL; daughter, Betty Miller, Grafton, WI; 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfred, Walter and Henry; sister in infancy; grandson, Scott Schild; and daughter-in-law, Ann (Tesh) Schild.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2018 at St. John's United Church of Christ with Rev. Kathleen Rinear officiating.
