Obituaries: Rufus A. Legler

BELLEVILLE/VERONA - Rufus A. Legler, age 85, Verona/Belleville, passed away at his home in the countryside that he loved on Saturday, October 9, 2010. He was born on March 6, 1925, the son of Emil and Katherine (Elmer) Legler. He graduated from Belleville High School in 1943 and married Patricia Gerber on June 20, 1947. They raised six children, Beth (Charlie) Campbell, Greg Legler, Joan Hoppenjan, Brian Legler, Bruce Legler (deceased) and Terri Fiez. He also is survived by 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a sister, Irma Humberg.

For many years Rufus and Pat farmed in Montrose Township, Belleville and operated Legler Trucking. He loved car racing, attending rural farm auctions, deer hunting, scrapping out metal and hanging out with friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pat, his son Bruce, son-in-laws Melvin Hoppenjan and Bob Fiez, a great-grandson, Matthew O'Dair and three brothers; Willis, Calvin, and Norman Legler.

Funeral services will be held at Zwingli United Church of Christ-Paoli, 1338 County PB, Belleville, WI on Friday, October 15th , 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Sara Thiessen (his favorite "good girl") officiating with burial in the Belleville Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home, 109 Greenway Cross, Belleville, WI from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 14th, 2010.

The family would like to thank his friends, medical staff at Verona Family Practice Clinic, St. Mary's Hospital, St. Mary's Care Center and Pastor Sara for their care and compassion through these past few years. Special thanks to Joe Truitt and Hospice for allowing him the ability to spend his final days peacefully in his home.
