BELLEVILLE/DAYTON - Matilene E. Clemens, age 98, a mother, a wife, and a teacher passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at her home in Dayton. She was born on August 2, 1915 in the rural Brooklyn/Albany area to her parents Clyde and Zora (Schwren) Brewer. As a youth Matilene was active in 4H and had won a showmanship award at the State Fair. Matilene graduated from Albany High School and then attended the Green County Teacher's College and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She then went on to teach in several rural schools in Green County including the Murray, Ross, Ferguson, Attica and West Dayton schools. Matilene was a dedicated teacher who wanted to serve as an inspiration to her students as she had been inspired by her own teachers. Following her time teaching at the West Dayton School Matilene retired to farm with her husband William "Bill" Clemens. Bill and Matilene were united in marriage on August 22, 1944 at the St. James Catholic Church Dayton and the couple enjoyed fifty-eight years together until Bill's passing in 2009. She was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Belleville and former member of St. James Catholic Church in Dayton where she was a member of the St. James Altar Society. She was also a co-founder of the original Dayton 4H club. Matilene enjoyed the many facets of rural life; farming, flowers, gardening, and observing and interacting with nature.

Matilene is survived by her son Gary Clemens and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, sister Melva Carroll, and brothers Marvin Brewer and Leland Brewer.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 338 S. Harrison St., Belleville, WI with the Rev. Michael Moon officiating with burial in the St. James Cemetery rural Belleville.

Relatives and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until time of services on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Belleville.

The Becker-Beal Funeral Home of Belleville is serving the family.
