BRODHEAD - Marshall Dan (Danny) Markham, age 78, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2008, at the Monroe Manor Nursing Home, Monroe, WI.
He was the oldest son of Dan and Mary (Earleywine) Markham, born November 22, 1929 in Janesville, Wisconsin.
Dan graduated from Brodhead High School in 1947 and the U.W.-Madison with a B.S. in economics in 1951. He was active in all major sports in high school, where he won the American Legion Award, lettered in basketball for three years at the University and was acting captain for most of the games in 1950 and 1951. He was a member of the National Honor Society and was a life member of the National "W" Club.
He married Helen Rose Gerber in 1951. The couple moved from Madison to Brodhead in 1952 where Dan joined his father at the Independent Register, Inc. He was one of the youngest editors in the state. His brother Dick joined the corporation after discharge from the Navy. He died at an early age of a brain tumor. Dan and Dick were instrumental in forming the Dairyland Press with Evansville and Edgerton, which is the central plant for printing several area publications. It was one of the first central plants in the state. Dan served one term on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association.
Dan enjoyed coaching young people in various sports and helped form the Brodhead Little League. Dan was very active in industry, business development and Jaycees, where he was president and a charter member, a National Director of the State Board and editor of the State Jaycee Magazine. He was honored by receiving the JC outstanding Young Man Award, and Outstanding Senior Citizen Award, and was an early recipient of the Brodhead High School Wall of Fame Award.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; three sons, Marshall "Kim" (Kathy), Kurt (Barb), all of Brodhead, Kent (Vicki), Oostburg, WI; daughters, Colet (Gary) Cook, Oregon, WI, and Colleen (Fred) Jennings, Lake Stevens, WA; grandchildren, Emily (Nathan) Broome, Angela (Kevin) Geiwitz, Andy, Neil, Adam, Brandon, Derek, Caleb, Amanda, Miranda, and Isaac Markham, Cody and Alex Cook, Cassandra and Jessica Jennings; and great-grandchildren, Camaron Markham, Brittany and Megan Broome, and Leilah Markham.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 24, 2008, at the United Methodist Church, Brodhead, WI, with Pastor Steve Groves officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, WI. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at the D. L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI, and from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Brodhead Library, Brodhead High School Band (uniforms), and the United Methodist Church.
