MONROE - Mabel Carol (Pederson Derendinger) Marty, age 82, of Monroe, passed away peacefully, and surrounded by loved ones, on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at Heartsong Assisted Living, Belleville, guided by the loving help of Agrace Hospice Care and Heartsong staff.
Mabel was born on December 31, 1931, in Iowa County, daughter of Seymour Peter and Hilda Cora (Peterson) Pederson, of Argyle. Mabel attended country school, where she excelled in all subjects, but was particularly fond of math. Mabel received an award from her teacher for perfect scores, before going to work on the family farm.
Mabel married Donald Derendinger (deceased) on December 31, 1951. They lived in Blanchardville and had seven children: Louise (Richard) Olson, Donna (Ronald) Brunner, Diana (David) Chaffee, Robert (Anna Shaw) Derendinger, Connie Derendinger, Tammy (Andrew) Barth, and Heidi (Steve Barfknecht) Derendinger.
On June 22, 1991, Mabel married Walter Marty, and they resided in Monroe. Mabel was a member of Veterans of Foreign War Cecil Jones Post 2312, the American Legion Post 84, the Moose Lodge, and the St. John's Church, all of Monroe. Mabel enjoyed dancing, playing euchre, and fishing with her husband Walt. She loved out-fishing Walt, especially when it came to blue gills and crappies, both locally and up-north.
Mabel was an extremely hard-worker, as a mother and housewife, and also during her employment at Advance Transformers, Swiss Colony, Avonmore Cheese, and St. Vincent de Paul, all of Monroe. Mabel also assisted her second husband with his former business, Marty Appliance Service.
Mabel was a happy-go-lucky, feisty Norwegian and prankster, with a quick wit and a hearty laugh. She had a green thumb; her plants, flowers, and gardens always thrived. She shared a love of music with her parents and siblings and played guitar for house parties while growing up. She passed her love of music on to her kids. She always had a song in her heart, as she sang and skipped through life. She was not afraid to express her opinion or do any job a man could do. Mabel loved people and animals, and both gravitated towards her. She was gracious to friends and family, as well as strangers and passersby. She was selfless and quick to offer anyone help or simply give them her million-dollar smile with a twinkle in her bright blue eyes. Mabel was a role model for her kids. She did the little things, like teaching them how to drive, which assuredly gave her a few white hairs. She did the big things, like teaching them her core values of honesty, strength, and courage. Mabel did a lot with a little, making small miracles every day. Lives were made better by Mabel being a part of them. She will be sorely missed by her family, extended family, and many friends, who love her so very much.
Mabel is survived by her second husband, 7 children, 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 3 step-children: Jacqueline (Wayne) Dieter, Jeanette (Eugene) Hasse, Nicki (Michael) Homan, 8 step-grandchildren, and 11 step-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mabel was preceded in death by her first husband; parents; great-grandchild Brayden Brunner; two nieces; two nephews; and her siblings: Hazel Pederson, Clifford (Arlene Hendrickson) Pederson, Mildred (Burnett Severson, Art) Olson, Norman (Doris Hendrickson) Pederson, Sylvia (Clarence) Anderson, Lester (Colleen Johnson) Pederson, Maurice (Colleen Vinje) Pederson, Herbert Pederson, Myron (Helen Johnson) Pederson (her twin), Norma (Jerome) Kammerud.
A visitation will be held at Shriner Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Dr., Monroe, from 4 to 8 p.m., on Monday, August 18, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 19, at St. John's Church, 1724 14th St., Monroe, at 11 a.m., with a visitation starting at 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe.
