LaVerne J. "Mike" Schmerse age 82 of Monroe, died Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at the Monroe Manor. Mike was born June 20, 1933 in Sylvester Township, Green County, the son of Chester W. and Alvina M. (Haman) Schmerse. He was a 1951 graduate of Monroe High School where he was a proud member of the 1950 conference champion football team. He was united in marriage to Doris M. Haman on January 10, 1954 in Monroe. Mike was stationed in Germany while serving with the U.S. Army for two years. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Monroe where he worked as a meat cutter for 42 years at Kroger and IGA in Monroe and Piggly Wiggly in Janesville until retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church and the church choir, Green County Harmony Chorus Barbershop, and the Monroe V.F.W. Post #2312. Mike loved spending time with his family, photography, golfing, fishing, hunting, traveling, motorcycle riding, playing cards, and enjoyed watching sports especially the Packers and Badgers.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris Schmerse of Monroe; a son, Daniel (Patrice) Schmerse of Milwaukee; two daughters, Jane (Douglas) Gaulrapp and JoAnn (Gregory) Colden, all of Monroe; four grandchildren, Ryan Colden (Natalie Marchant), Sarah Gaulrapp, Katie Gaulrapp, and Emily Colden; two great grandchildren, Olivia and Kuper Colden; a sister, Evelyn (Ralph) Krauss of Monroe; and two brothers, Nathan (Caralee) Schmerse of Markesan, WI, and James (Beverly) Schmerse of Clinton, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great-grandson, Daniel Colden.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Reverend Randy Booth officiating. Inurnment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in his name. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
