James R. "Bart" Bartelt

James R. "Bart" Bartelt, age 65 of Monroe, Wisconsin, died on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at V.A. Hospital in Madison. He was born on June 18, 1945 in Monroe, the son of Leo and Dorothy (Marti) Bartelt and graduated from Monroe High School in 1965. Bart entered the U.S. Army in February of 1967 and served during the TET Offensive in Vietnam in 1968, being Honorably discharged in January of 1969.

James married Sandra Elmer in 1975 and later married Janet Schliem Perry. Bart worked for Milwaukee Cheese, Monroe Ready Mix, Irv Klapper Masonry, Local Laborer's Union #464. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Wis. Vietnam Vets Chapter #3, 40/8 1121 of Wis, Cottie #14 Monroe, VFW Post in Brodhead, Vietnow Badger Chapter, Zilmer Riley American Legion Post #84 of Monroe, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #754 of Monroe & Retired Monroe Fireman's Association (served for 21 years), and was instrumental in the development of the Green County Memorial Park in Monroe & in 1987 the development of the Vietnam Memorial in Monticello. He was active with the Avenue of Flags at Greenwood Cemetery, on Memorial Day. Bart enjoyed NASCAR racing, the Packers, Brewers and Badgers, but he especially loved being with his family and "rugrats."

Surviving are his wife, Janet "Jan" Schliem Perry; sons, Dan, Roger, & Larry Bartelt; daughters, Tammy (Jeff) Babler & Shelly (Scott) Trupke; brother, Ole (Kathy) Bartelt; sister, Kay (John) Tuescher; sister-in-law, Marilyn Bartelt; step-father, Alvie Riese; and grandchildren, Nicci Babler, Alex Bartelt, & Jackson Trupke. He is predeceased by his father & step-mother, Leo & Millie Bartelt; mother, Dorothy Riese; brother, Eugene "Gene" Bartelt; and niece, Lisa Tuescher.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 17, 2011 at St. John's United Church of Christ with Rev. Gretchen Sylvester officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe with Military Graveside Services.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home in Monroe.

A Memorial Fund is being established in Bart's memory.
