Irvin H. Matzke age 90 of Monroe, formerly of Juda, died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Aster Retirement Community. Irvin was born August 5, 1922 in Virgil, South Dakota, the son of Arthur W. and Mabel E. (Gipple) Matzke. He graduated from High School in Western Nebraska, attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, and North Central College in Naperville, IL. Irvin entered the Army-Air Force in 1942 serving in the Pacific Theatre as a B-24 pilot who flew nine missions over Tokoyo, Japan. He was relieved of active duty in 1946 and retired with the rank of Major from the Air Force reserve in Feb., 1969. Irvin married Mardelle Norder on June 26, 1946 at the Juda Evangelical Church. He was employed at Carter and Gruenewald Implement in Juda for over 40 years until retiring in 1986. He and Mardelle moved to Kihei, Maui, Hawaii, for 12 years before returning to live in Monroe. He was a member of the Juda Zion United Methodist Church and was actively involved in the Juda Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad for 35 years.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mardelle Matzke of Monroe; a brother, Paul (Hazel) Matzke; a nephew, Brian (Peggy) Matzke; a greatnephew, Chip (Jessica) Matzke and their daughter, Reagan, all of Juda; a greatniece, Calli (Jeff) Ingebritsen of Mt. Horeb; and several nieces, nephews, greatnieces, and greatnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth (Carl) Schmidt and Irene (Orville) Zabel, all of Nebraska; and two nephews, William Zabel and Warren Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe. Interment with military rites will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Juda. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given in Irvin's name to Juda Zion Church or Juda Fire Dept.
