Howard P. Isely, age 95 of Monroe, died Monday, March 3, 2008 at the New Glarus Nursing Home. Howard was born October 23, 1912 on the home farm in Washington Township, Green County, the son of William and Emma (Hartwig) Isely. He attended Purcell Rural School. Howard and Anna Waeffler were married on July 31, 1934 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe. She preceded him in death on February 24, 1967. Howard worked as a mason and carpenter until 1948. He farmed in Washington Township from 1948 until 1968 and then was employed with Bruni-Miller Construction for over 20 years until his retirement.

He was a member of Washington Reformation United Church of Christ, a longtime pilot and member of the Green County Pilots Assoc., and enjoyed playing musical instruments especially the guitar, bandoni, and harmonica.

Survivors include six children, Paul (Patty) Isely of Monroe, Dolores (Darrell) Block of Janesville, Emily (Greg) Wild of Monroe, Dwayne Isely of Monroe, Jerry (Betty) Isely of Grandview Plaza, KS, and Wanda (Kenneth) Slack of Juda; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lela Isely of Monroe; and two sisters-in-law, Jean and Margaret Waeffler, both of Rockford, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Arland Isely in 1959, John Isely in 1999; a great-granddaughter, Veronica Coulthard; two brothers, Willis and Arlie Isely; and two sisters, Helen Unger and Betty Swiggum. He was also preceded by Bessie and Beulah Isely.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Washington Reformation United Church of Christ, rural Monticello, with Pastor Mary Gafner officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe, followed by a luncheon at the church. Friends may call on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe, and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
