Henry Carl Heinzelman age 95 of Monroe, died on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at home surrounded by his family. Henry was born in Palmyra, Wisconsin on May 2, 1919 to Carl and Florence (Jolliffe) Heinzelman. Henry was a 1938 graduate of Monroe High School and attended UW-Madison short courses after his military service. He entered the United States Army on November 6, 1941 and served with H-Company, 2nd battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division serving in Iceland, the British Isles, France, and Germany. He received the E.A.M.E. Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, American Defense Service Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Good Conduct Medal. Henry participated in the Normandy, Northern France, and Germany Campaigns.
After Henry's discharge on October 3, 1945, he returned home to help on the family farm in Clarno Township, where he resided until his death. Henry married Lois Block, his loving wife of 57 years, on June 29, 1957. They were blessed with three children: Stan (Wendy) Heinzelman, Monroe, WI; Suzette (Craig) Smith, McFarland, and Pam (Larry) Hauge, New Glarus. He is further survived by 6 grandchildren: Meagan (Joe) Kempfer, Nena Heinzelman, Michelle Smith, Danny Smith, Brianna Hauge, and Evan Hauge, a great-grandson due any day, Denver Michael Kempfer; sister-in-law, Inez Heinzelman; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Herman Heinzelman; and a sister-in-law, Irene (Block) Heinzelman.
Henry loved his life on the farm especially driving tractor, spending time at the cottage, but above all else loved spending time with family and was most proud of his children and grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan. His love of playing cards was passed on to his children and grandchildren. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, serving on the church council for several years. He was a Life Member of the Monroe V.F.W. Post #2312, and a Past President of the Green County Cheese CO-OP.
Funeral services for Henry will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014, at 1:00 p.m., at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1724 14th Street, Monroe, with Rev. Tiff Bates officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe, followed by a luncheon at the church. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Henry's name. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
