Hazel V. Kundert, age 100, of Monticello passed into the arms of her Lord at the New Glarus Home on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.
Hazel was born July 26, 1911 in Washington Township, the daughter of Joseph and Bertha (Wittenwyler) Zweifel.
She spent most of her life in Monticello, graduating from Monticello High School in 1929 and Green County Normal School in 1930.
She taught at Attica Rural School for 4 years and the Voegeli Rural School for one year.
She married Kenneth W. Kundert on June 17, 1935 in Monroe. They made their home in Blanchardville where Kenneth was a Smith Hughes instructor for five years. Their son, Kenneth R., was born on June 17, 1939.
In 1940 the couple moved to Jefferson where Kenneth taught until March, 1943. They then moved to Kenneth's family farm to help his father who had retired. Kenneth was accidentally electrocuted in a farming accident in July, 1942.
Hazel and her three year old son moved back to Monticello, where she was offered a teaching position. She taught for 34 years, including 7 as Monticello's Elementary Teaching Principal. While teaching, she earned her BE degree at UW-Whitewater and an art minor at UW-Platteville. She loved teaching and enjoyed contact with her former students after retiring.
Hazel was a long time member of Zwingli UCC, Altar Guild, Zwingli Women's Guild, GCREA, WREA, NRTA, and was a life member of the Monticello Area Historical Society.
Following her retirement she enjoyed volunteer activities, reading, sewing, gardening, crafts, painting, playing Bridge, and of course spending time with her family.
