Gertrude B. (Ruef) Montgomery

Gertrude B. (Ruef) Montgomery age 96 of Monroe, died Monday, January 24, 2011 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Monroe.

Gertie was born May 8, 1914 in Fairchild, Wisconsin, the daughter of Rudolph and Lena (Herrmann) Barth. She graduated from Monroe High School and attended Green County Normal School.

She married Arnold Ruef on Feb. 12, 1938 at St. John's United Church of Christ, Monroe. They farmed in Jefferson Township until Arnold's death in September, 1968. Gertie worked as a bookkeeper at McClellan's and Solomon Auto Parts and later was employed at Photomat in Monroe and Madison before retiring.

She married Buzz Montgomery on Sept. 19, 1986, he preceded her in death in August, 2005.

Gertie was a member of the Juda Zion United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.

She is survived by three children, Joyce (E.J.) Hoesly of Juda, Gloria Ruef of Madison, and Robert (Bertie) Ruef of Iron River, WI; seven grandchildren, Lisa (Roger) Behnke of New Glarus, Todd (Trish) Hoesly of Brodhead, Jennifer (Adam) Cain-Ruef of Alameda, CA, Rebecca (Ben) Weaver of Portland, OR, Kristopher (Lisa) Ruef of Bend, OR, Jason (Jessica) Brooks of Austin, TX, David Brooks of Brooklyn, N.Y., and eleven greatgrandchildren.

She was blessed to have an extended family which includes Shirley (Nate) Lindsey of Golden, CO and JoAnn Hawthorn of Monroe.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ernie Barth; three sisters, Esther Kubly, Frieda Leu, Maggie Barth; and two sisters and one brother in infancy.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at the Juda Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas Miller officiating. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Juda. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. A memorial fund will be established in Gertrude's name for the Juda Zion Church. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
