George F. Hartman, 88, of Wausau, WI, died Monday, June 30, 2014 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born March 17, 1926 in Pottstown, PA, a son of the late William and Esther (Smith) Hartman. He married Anna Casey in Madison, WI on June 15, 1949. She preceded him in death on February 11, 2008.
Survivors include his four children: Bonnie (Bill) Johnson, Lincoln, NE; Jim Hartman, Fort Collins, CO; Joan (Kent) Borgen, Lake City, MN; and Doris (Brian) Stenger, Wilmington, NC; two grandsons, Michael and David Stenger; a sister Betty Schalata, Pottstown, PA; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Besides his parents, five brothers and sisters, and his wife Anna, George was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorraine Hartman.
Hartman, a lifelong, avid outdoorsman, served as an x-ray technician in Germany in WWII. Having earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of WI-Madison, he served as UW County Extension Agent in Green and Marathon counties. Prior to that, he was the 4-H agent in Crawford and Langlade counties. Hartman was instrumental in bringing modern farming techniques and common-sense practices to all the farmers he was honored to serve. His ability to teach about the conservation of wildlife, soil and water, and loving the out-of-doors was a major contribution to the education of school children in the areas he served.
Associate professor emeritus Hartman received numerous local, state and national honors for his groundbreaking innovations in his field, and for his ability to teach these practices to hundreds of farm families and school children.
A gifted craftsman and storyteller, he will be missed by those who knew him.
Cremation. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Monroe, WI on Sept. 20, 2014 at 9:30 am. Peterson-Kraemer Funeral Home in Wausau, WI was in charge of arrangements.
