Fred A. Liegel, age 89 of Monroe, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Saturday, December 3, 2016 at New Glarus Nursing Home. He was born on September 4, 1927 in Plain, WI, the son of Albert and Elizabeth (Kraemer) Liegel. He graduated from Plain High School and then entered the U.S. Navy, from May of 1945 to May of 1946, served as an aircraft mechanic on the air craft carrier, U.S.S. Ranger. Fred married Esther Elmer on January 9, 1954 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo. Fred worked as a master meat cutter in Baraboo, Madison and Monroe, he later was the grounds keeper at the Swiss Colony. He was a member of St. Victors Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, serving as a grand Knight for several years.

He is survived by his children: Linda (Goodman) (Dave) Beightol of Monroe, Randy (Deborah) Goodman of Reedsburg, Brian Liegel of Fort Atkinson, Larry (Emily) Liegel of Janesville, Mark Liegel of North Carolina, Kevin (Linda) Liegel of North Carolina, Susan (Dan) Heather of St. Charles, IL, Cindi (Lowell) Egger of Monroe; 24 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brother, Robert (Mary) Liegel of Kenosha, WI; sisters, Elaine Liegel of Madison and Janice (Wayne) Pivotto of Montello, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister, Virginia Breuning.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 8, 2016 at SHRINER-HAGER-GOHLKE FUNERAL HOME with Monsignor Larry Bakke as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 8, 2016 from 11:00 am until the time of service, at the funeral home.
