BRODHEAD - Ervin D. Elmer, age 96, of Brodhead, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, January 12, 2014. He was born on December 10, 1917 in Monroe, WI, the son of John and Louise (Mauerman) Elmer.
Ervin attended the Pengra School and worked in a factory in Brodhead until entering the U.S. Army during World War II. He served from October, 1941 to September, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant in the Panama Canal Zone. He received the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and Rifle Marksman. After honorable discharge from service, he married Betty Huggler on December 29, 1945 at the parsonage of the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Monroe, WI. He and Betty celebrated 68 years of marriage on December 29, 2013. Ervin and Betty farmed in the Monroe and Albany vicinity until 1977 when they retired and moved to their rural Brodhead home.
Ervin is survived by his wife, Betty, Brodhead; three sons, Dennis (Claudia), Janesville, WI, Richard (Rebecca) Albany, WI, Don (Jean) Mineral Point, WI; three grandchildren, Christy and Chad Elmer, Janesville, WI, and Naomi (Brian) Cairy, Brodhead, WI; and three great-grandchildren, Noah, Kylan and Harper. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert Elmer of Monroe, and two sisters, Gladys Miller and Ruth Gurske, both of Rice Lake, WI and a great-grandson, Mason Ervin Alan Elmer .
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 16, 2014, at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Juda, WI, with full military rites.
