MONTICELLO - Dr. Edmundo Cabral Aquino, age 79, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. He was born on November 20, 1934 in Lemery, Batangas, Philippines and was the son of Vivencio and Maria Rosario Cabral Aquino. He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas Medical School in Manila, Philippines in 1959. While completing his medical residency at Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he met his future wife, Nancy Lorene Durtschi, and they were married on June 20, 1964. He completed his surgical residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he and Nancy had their first child, Mark, in 1965. They then spent 18 months in the Philippines with his family. In 1967, they returned to the United States and he established his general surgery and family medical practice in Monticello, Wisconsin. He and Nancy welcomed two more children to their family, Michelle in 1969 and Michael in 1972. He became an American citizen in 1975.
Dr. Aquino was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons and the Green County Medical Society. He was an extremely dedicated physician, giving an extraordinary amount of time and care to his patients throughout his career. His family remembers countless hours he spent visiting patients, making house calls, reviewing medical journals, and practicing surgical techniques in order to best serve his patients. In addition to his private medical practice, he served as the medical director for the New Glarus Home for many years. He was a very skilled diagnostician, an excellent general surgeon, and a caring doctor and friend to his patients, many of whom spanned generations in his care.
During his retirement, he enjoyed reading and improving his already-skilled golf game at the Edelweiss Chalet Country Club, where he was a charter member. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. The entire extended family enjoyed two wonderful vacations to Eagle River, Wisconsin in 2012 and 2013, where he and Nancy spent time watching the loons on Catfish Bay, going for sunset boat rides, and watching the grandchildren play on the beach. He was also an enthusiastic mah-jongg player, and had recently begun teaching the older grandchildren to play. His running commentary about the luck of the tiles he drew was fun to hear.
"Papa" was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather; his family and their well-being and happiness were the most important things in his life. He was always ready to welcome someone onto his lap, suture a torn stuffed animal, read a book, or take a look at a little "boo-boo" or rash on one of the grandchildren. They all became very accustomed to being examined by Papa's stethoscope, otoscope, and skilled, loving hands.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy (Durtschi) Aquino and his three children and their families: Mark, his wife Kellie, and their two daughters, Rachel (age 8) and Laurel (age 5) of Mount Horeb; Michelle Aquino-Schopf, her husband Brian, and their children Allison (age 13), Olivia (age 10) and Luke (age 6), of Elkhorn; and Michael, his wife Becky, and their two sons, Bryce (age 4) and Jacob (age 1) of Monticello.
He is further survived by two sisters and a brother in the Philippines and a brother, Mario, and his wife Teresa, in California; as well as Nancy's brother Robert Durtschi and his wife Donna of Monticello, and Nancy's sister Sharon Knobel and her husband Philip of East Troy, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and Nancy's parents Fred and Lorene Durtschi.
His family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Alan Singer, Dr. Russell Reiss, and the entire medical care team at St. Mary's Hospital. As a physician, Dr. Aquino would have been very impressed with and grateful for their skill and compassion. Memorial donations may be sent to the family, to the Monticello Public Library, or to the Monroe Clinic hospice care program. At his request, a private family service will be held. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.
