Donald J. Knobel, age 92 of Madison, formerly of Monticello, died Friday, September 11, 2009 at Oak Park Place in Madison. Donald was born February 10, 1917 in Monticello, the son of Albert and Edna (Juingst) Knobel. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1935 and attended M.A.T.C. Don and Marie McQuillan were married September 2, 1939 in Monticello. He entered the U.S. Army on March 7, 1945 and was honorably discharged on Nov. 10, 1946 at Fort Sheridan, IL.
Don was co-owner of Arn and Zweifel Cheese Storage in Monticello before selling to Monroe Cheese Corp in 1962.
He was a longtime member of the Monticello Fire Department, lifetime member of the Monticello American Legion Amstutz Marty Post #256, and was a charter member of the Edelweiss Country Club.
Donald and Marie moved to Mesa, AZ in 1982 and returned to Wisconsin in 2005.
He is survived by his wife, Marie of Madison; a son, Philip (Sharon) Knobel of Elkhorn, WI; a daughter, Kay Ann Knobel of Madison; four grandchildren, Tammie (Andy) Lynch, Cory Knobel, Kendra Schlittler, and Cameron Knobel; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Angel; and a sister in infancy.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at the Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, 360 S. Garfield St., Monticello.
Inurnment will be in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in Donald's name to Alzheimer's Association or HospiceCare, Inc.
