Donald C. Avery, age 77 of Monticello, died Friday, April 29, 2011 at the New Glarus Home. Donald was born March 3, 1934 in New London, CT, the son of Carlysle and Grace (Finnegan) Avery. He graduated from New London High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1957. He married Rosemary C. Wittenwyler on June 15, 1958 at the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello.
Following their marriage Don and Rosemary lived in Monticello from 1958 until 1961 before returning to Connecticut.
Don worked as a ship fitter building submarines for General Dynamics Electric Boat of Groton, CT. He worked on the Nautilus, the first atomic submarine. In 1969 they came back to Monticello and Don was employed at Industrial Combustion until retiring due to poor health in 1980.
He was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ, U.S. Army reserves (1959-1961), Monticello American Legion Amstutz Marty Post #256, New Glarus Masonic Lodge #310, and a past member of the Monticello Village Board.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Avery of Monticello; a son, Michael (Jodi) Avery of Appleton, WI; a daughter, Dona (Jeffreye) Booth of Hanover, MASS; three grandsons, Travis Avery, Collin Avery, and Joshua Booth; a sister, Joan Dunbar of Quaker Hill, CT; five nieces and nephews, Dennis (Jessica) Dunbar, Deborah (Tim) Krodel, Denise (Brian) Tedeschi, Amy Kuberski, and Jill (Dean) Starkey; and 11 great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert E. Avery in infancy; and two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Dunbar and Robert M. Wittenwyler.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 6, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 5, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, with a Masonic service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Zwingli Church, Monticello Foundation Scholarship Fund, Monroe Clinic Homecare, or New Glarus E.M.S.
