Virgil a longtime resident of Mission Valley passed away in the evening of May 26, 2017 after a 3-month battle with an infection. A very kind and gentle man loved by many, and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
Born first of four children April 28, 1949 to Carl Albert von Arx, and Mary Arlene Wampfler von Arx in Monroe, WI.
Virgil graduated from Monroe High School in Monroe, WI, June 1, 1967. Virgil was employed at the Chalet Cheese factory until he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh earning two degrees, a Business degree and a degree in History. Virgil was quite a History buff he had a wide range of interest in political history as well as famous people. He loved to read about their lives. He also was an avid reader of military history and famous people in the military. He and Virginia loved music. Virgil loved country music too and knew the words to many artists' music. During his last few weeks they played country music in his room and his nurses observed he would sing along, as he knew all the words to the songs.
However his lifelong desire was to follow his father and brother in a military career, so after college he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He would eventually be assigned to the Philadelphia Naval Base. On weekends he would go to the Philadelphia Navy yard dances on the base, where he would meet the love of his life. One special evening Virginia happened to be there with a friend who introduced them, and it was the beginning of a beautiful love affair with a woman who would become his wife for 19 years. Friends say they were truly meant to be together.
On September 10th, 1994 Virgil and Virginia were married in South Philadelphia in Virginia's parish she had attended her entire life. Her family said it was a beautiful wedding and they were so very happy.
Virgil's Navy career would lead to the Mediterranean Sea and many other ports over a span of several years. He said his only regret was he did not go into the Navy sooner and have a longer military career.
Virgil had many interests, volunteering his time on a regular basis. His favorite was being a part of the Encanto Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lemon Grove. He was an active member attending meetings, helping others, doing whatever was needed at the post. He would say Friday night was Virginia's favorite night because she loved Karaoke where she would throw in a love song for Virgil in her mix of songs she liked to sing. After Virginia passed away he stepped up his volunteering to every day, as he wanted to participate on a regular basis.
His other favorite interest was helping to Usher at the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala for weekend Mass. Virgil was faithful and responsible making sure he was always early, and rarely missed a weekend. It was very important to him as he said he felt this was his way of serving the Lord.
Virgil's brother Kenneth von Arx of La Mesa predeceased Virgil.
He precedes his brother James Frederick von Arx of Monroe, WI.
A sister Dorthea Rose von Arx of New Glarus, WI.
A nephew Stephen von Arx and a niece Sherry von Arx
Virgil leaves behind numerous family members living in Wisconsin.
A joint service will be held for Virgil and Virginia at the Miramar National Cemetery
