Carson Brian Gerloff, 58, passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, WI, surrounded by family and friends in song and prayer. Carson was born on October 9, 1952, in Freeport, IL, the son of Harold and Harriet (Stratmann) Gerloff. Carson was a 1970 graduate of Lena-Winslow High School and then attended Highland Community College for a year. He married Sue Leverton on December 30, 1972, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lena. Carson was employed as a carpenter for Lena Builders Inc. at Eleroy for four years, Heinselman Construction in Monroe, WI, for five years, and then in 1981, he and Harlan Erickson started Gerloff-Erickson Construction, where he worked for the next seventeen years in Argyle, WI. For the past 13 years he has been employed by Tanknology of Elgin, IL, as a Tank Technician.
Carson attended The Bridge church in Freeport, IL. He enjoyed his family and adored spending time with his beloved grandchildren. In his earlier years, he coached his son's tee ball team in Winslow and Little League team in Lena. Some of his hobbies were watching birds and gardening. He loved music, and played guitar for the Bitter Tears band while in high school. He was a skilled carpenter, and built his family's home in 1974. He was a former board member of the Winslow Park District and the Lena Library.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Sue, of Winslow; one son, Benjamin (Rebecca) Gerloff of Pine River, WI; one daughter, Melissa (Dan) Griffin of Freeport; his mother, Harriet Gerloff, and his mother in-law, Letha Leverton, both of Lena; one sister, Carol (Delvin) Bonjour of Freeport; three grandchildren: Taylor and Carter Griffin of Freeport, and Tucker Gerloff of Pine River, WI; one aunt, Viola Rachuy of Freeport; one uncle, Lloyd Moring of Cedarville, IL. Also his brothers and sisters in law: Linda (Jack) Ritter of Normal, IL, Barb (Bill) Siegenthaler of Monroe, WI, Bob (Diane) Leverton of Lena, Rich (Deb) Leverton of Lena, Bev (Steve) Young of Dixon, and Dianne (Lenny) Reynolds of Rochelle; also many nieces, nephews, and cousins. And finally, his two cats, Jed and Hank.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Gerloff; father-in-law, Robert Leverton; grandparents; many aunts and uncles; and a great-niece, Cameron Siegenthaler.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at The Bridge church at 1 East Stephenson Street, Freeport, IL.
Visitation will be held at Leamon Funeral Home in Lena on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
Pastors Mark Tipton and Fred Woodruff will officiate the services.
Burial will take place at Rock Lily Cemetery in Winslow, IL.
A memorial has been established in his name.
