MADISON - The driver of a bus who struck and killed a New Glarus woman in Madison last summer did not follow bus company procedures to compensate for a blind spot in mirrors on buses, Madison Metro officials said Wednesday.
Maureen Grant, 58, was killed as she was crossing University Avenue at Lake Street on the University of Wisconsin campus June 22.
The bus driver, Debra Foster, told investigators she did not see Grant in the crosswalk as she was turning the bus left onto University Avenue from Lake Street, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
Madison Metro drivers are instructed to maneuver their body to compensate for the blind spot. Foster did not do so, according to the report.
As a result of the accident, Madison Metro is changing the mounting of driver's side mirrors on buses to help minimize the blind spot.
