Betty J. Hughes, age 86 of Monroe, died Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the Monroe Clinic Hospice Home. Betty was born on June 19, 1931 in Rockford, IL, the daughter of Walter and Alice (Gierhart) Schroeder. She graduated from Argyle High School in 1949 and worked for the telephone company in Argyle for four years. She married Joseph E. Hughes on February 17, 1968 in Fort Leavenworth, KS. Betty was employed by the Monroe phone Company (Utelco) for 42 years before retiring in 1996. She was a member of St. Victor Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary to Cecil Jones Post #2312, and was known as an excellent cook. She also was a sports fan who mostly enjoyed watching the brewers and packers.
Betty is survived by her husband, Joe Hughes of Monroe; a daughter, Connie Scott of Fox Lake, IL; one niece and four nephews. She is also lovingly survived by a special niece, Amy Fernstaedt of Monroe. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frank E. Schroeder; and a sister, Leona Sauder.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church with Monsignor Larry Bakke, celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
