Bernice Miller Olson age 94 a resident of St. Clare Friedensheim, died Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the Monroe Manor. Bernice was born March 10, 1920 on the Bloom home farm in Monroe Township, the daughter of John and Katharine (Benkert) Bloom. She graduated from Monroe High School and married Leland Miller on August 3, 1940. He preceded her in death on July 14, 1990. She married Arthur Olson on Feb. 25, 1995 and he preceded her in death on April 7, 2013. Bernice worked as a receptionist at Pleasant View Nursing Home and was employed as a librarian at the Arabut Ludlow Memorial Library for 15 years until retiring at age 62. She and Leland farmed the Miller Century Farmstead on County Trunk N for 50 years. Following her retirement she and her husband enjoyed wintering in Apache Junction, AZ for several years. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and a former member of the Green County Homemakers, Monroe Moose Lodge, Monroe Woman's Club, ESA Sorority, and a 4H Leader. One of her favorite pastimes was reading, especially about western history.
She is survived by her two daughters, Vicki (Richard) Ward of Darlington, and Maribeth Lindstrand of Beloit; four grandchildren, Christine (Jeff) Stauffacher, Elizabeth (Mike) Suchomel, Rick W. (Joan) Ward, and Jody Ace; four great grandchildren, Rebecca, Tristen, Abigail, and Lucas. She is further survived by step-children, Kristine Olson, Ann (John) Meade, Sylvan (Jan) Olson, Myron (Geri) Olson, and Neil (Val) Olson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a son, Phillip Miller; a brother, Harry Bloom; and three sisters, Frances Stauffacher, Kathryn Drumm, and Margie Hoesly.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 11:00 A.M., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe with Rev. Tiff Bates officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe, followed by a luncheon at Saint John's United Church of Christ. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Memorials are suggested to the Monticello Public Library in Bernice's name.
