Alvin A. (Al) Zuhlke, age 87 of Monroe, was called home on Friday, May 20, 2011. Al was born on March 10, 1924 in Sylvester Township, Green County, the son of Albert and Amelia (Sommerfeldt) Zuhlke. Except for the period from 1947-1960, he was a lifelong resident of Green County. He attended schools in Monroe, graduating from Monroe high School in 1941. On March 19, 1944 he married Roberta Oliver.
After farming several years in Clarno Township, he attended The University of Wisconsin-Madison from which he graduated in 1951. He obtained his CPA certification in 1955. He worked as an executive accountant in Chicago and Milwaukee until 1960, when he returned to Monroe to manage Monroe Milling Corporation. In 1975 he became Finance Director for Green County, retiring from that position in 1994. He had done consulting work during the early years of his retirement. On December 1, 1978 he married Sharlene Cushing.
He was currently a member of Monroe Bible Church and actively supported several Christian ministries, both local and abroad. An avid fan of southern Gospel music, he reluctantly confined his own solo work to the shower.
He is survived by his wife, Sharlene, Three daughters: Mary (Tom) Nondahl of Wausatosa, WI, Arlene (Rick) Rasmussen of Eau Claire, WI, Carrie (Alan) Ball of Pendleton, IN; two sons: Tom (Nancy) of Berlin, WI and Jim (Debbie) of Barrington, IL; 12 grandchildren and beloved foster children and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill, and grandchildren: Bradley Oliver Zuhlke and Emily Ann Rasmussen.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2011 at Shriner Hager Gohlke funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Monroe Bible Church, with Pastor Dan Krahenbuhl officiating. A luncheon will follow the services. Inurnment will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization devoted to the rehabilitation of seriously wounded war veterans. Donations may be sent to the family for forwarding to WWP or directly to WWP National processing Center, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
