Alice Louise Camenzind, age 97 of Monroe, died peacefully at home on Thursday, December 27, 2012, with her daughter and son by her side. Alice was born on October 11, 1915 in Albany Township, Green County, the daughter of Jacob and Elise (Janzi) Rufener. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1933 and from Green County Normal School in 1934. She married Franz Camenzind on April 13, 1936 at St. Victor Catholic Church in Monroe. She worked making cheese with her husband at the Gunderson Cheese factory near Yellowstone Lake and raising her family. In 1948 they moved to the Chapel Cheese factory near Rock Grove, IL, and later bought a small farm on the edge of Monroe after retiring from the cheese industry. Alice loved gardening, baking, cooking, and cross-stitching. She was a member of St. Victor Catholic Church, GUGG, Golden Agers, Swiss Club, and was a seasonal worker at the Swiss Colony.
Alice is survived by a daughter, Katherine Blaum of Lincoln, Illinois; and a son Franz J. Camenzind of Jackson, Wyoming; five grand children; seven great grandchildren; five brothers, Erwin (Ardelis) of Monroe, Arnold (Gloria) of Belleville, Ernest( Carol) of Monroe, Emil (JoAnne) of Monticello, and Walter (Sandy) Rufener of Monroe; and sisters Gertrude Voegeli and Erna Maske, both of Monroe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on June 1, 1988; an infant son; and two brothers, Jacob and Armin Rufener.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 31, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church with Father Larry Bakke officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Alice's name for the American Cancer Society. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
