WILLOW SPRINGS — Two people suffered life-threatening injuries when their SUV hit a combine on Wisconsin 23 west of Yellowstone Lake Saturday morning.

Manuel De Jesus Reyes-Avila, 24, Darlington, and a 2-year-old boy were taken to Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville and then UW Hospital in Madison by Med Flight helicopter.

The crash occurred at 23 and Lafayette County G around 11:20 a.m.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Reyes-Avila was driving north when he tried to pass a combine driven by Thomas W. Pratt, 63, Dodgeville, along with other farm implements and other vehicles as Pratt was turning left onto County G.

Reyes-Avila’s SUV hit the left front tire of the combine, and the SUV overturned several times before stopping into the east-side ditch line on 23.

The Sheriff’s Office said 23 was clearly marked as a no-passing zone with double yellow lines on the road.

The 2-year-old was ejected from the vehicle during the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said. Pratt was not injured.

Darlington police, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Lafayette County, Mineral Point and Fitch-Rona EMS, Darlington and Mineral Point Fire, and the Lafayette County Highway Department assisted at the crash scene.

Passing in a no-passing zone, speed, and improper use of safety restraints are believed to have contributed to the severity of the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash remains under investigation.
