MONROE — Stephenson County Sheriff’s officials have yet to identify a Monroe man they arrested using a SWAT team to peacefully end a standoff in rural Orangeville early Saturday morning.
The defendant, however, is still fighting for his life in an area hospital, after apparently overdosing on drugs while police surrounded his house.
The incident began just after 6:20 a.m. on June 17 when a female called law enforcement to remove a 28-year-old man from her home in the 1100 block of West Rock Grove Road, according to a statement from the sheriff. He also had an outstanding warrant through the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
Deputies responded immediately, but the man did not come out willingly, and “additional law enforcement resources” were called to the scene. A command post was soon set up at the Oneco Township building.
“The responding deputy subsequently made contact with the male suspect, who then threatened to instigate a lethal-force encounter if law enforcement entered the residence,” the statement said. “After all efforts to generate voluntary compliance were exhausted, a search warrant for the residence was obtained.”
At about 2 p.m., a Stephenson County tactical team entered the residence to execute the warrant and found the suspect unconscious and in “medical distress” from an apparent drug overdose.
Life-saving activity began, EMS responded and the man was transported to a local hospital. He was then flown by helicopter to an undisclosed area hospital where he apparently remained on Monday.
No one was injured in the incident, police said. They were assisted by officers from the Ogle County Sheriff’s office and the Illinois State Police.
Attempts to reach the sheriff’s office Monday to determine the man’s identity and condition were unsuccessful.
