City committee to discuss redistricting plan

MONROE - The City of Monroe Judiciary and Ordinance Review Committee will discuss redistricting city wards at 5 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.

The meeting is open to the public.

New census data pushed the county to plan a redistricting, creating a district in the northeast and eliminating a district in the city.

By state law, the county cannot have more than the 31 districts it now has.

The ten city wards are currently matched to the county district boundaries, but the proposed county redistricting maps reduce the city districts to nine. Matching ward areas to county districts helps reduce election costs.

If the city were to match its wards to the county districts again, at least four of Monroe's aldermen - Jan Lefevre, Chris Beer, Sara Conway and Charles Koch - would be displaced from their wards and the people who voted them into office.

The county redistricting map can be viewed at www.co.green.wi.gov under the Resources/Directories linked tab.
