MONROE - With a successful first year in 2011 under its belt, the Monsignor Thomas F. Campion Charitable Fund is once against hosting the Championship Cheese Tasting event, sponsored by the Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association and the Foreign Type Cheesemakers.
The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 27 at Old Smokey's, 1301 17th St., Monroe.
This year the cheeses, between 90 and 100 different samples, are from the 2012 World Championship Cheese Contest held in March at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison.
Those cheeses are now coming to Monroe.
"No place else will most people be able to sample this many varieties of cheeses from around the world," said Michael Doyle, a member of the fund's board of directors.
The event last year, featuring cheese from the U.S. Cheese Contest, launched the fund, created by Monroe residents and members of the cheesemaking industry, to honor the late Campion, a long-time Monroe resident, priest, and community booster. The fund supports religious, educational and non-profit organizations in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
In its first year, the charitable fund provided $1,000 to the Literacy Council of Green County and $500 for a press box for the Green County YMCA, recognizing Campion's love for reading; his promotion of healthy activities for children; and his support of Monroe student athletes, whom he dubbed "Campion's Champions."
Doyle expects donations to increase as the fund matures.
Campion may be best known for founding the Apostolate to the Handicapped, a continuing ministry funded by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Madison, which reaches out to the physically and mentally disabled. For 43 years, Campion directed the organization, bringing the Apostolate to the Handicapped program with him when he moved to Monroe in 1972. He was named a Monsignor in 2000.
After Campion's death in November 2010, many members of the community wanted to do something "to keep his memory alive," said Doyle, who refers to Campion affectionately as "T.C."
The Championship Cheese Tasting event features the international championship cheese samplings; a rib eye steak sandwich dinner with potato salad and baked beans; free beer; and a silent auction and raffle, for a $20 donation at the door.
Donations to the fund may also be made directly by sending a check to the Monsignor Thomas F. Campion Charitable Fund, P.O. Box 173, Monroe, Wis. 53566. Credit card donations may also be made at the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin's website: www.cfsw.org. All donations to the fund are tax deductible.
