MONROE — No charges have been filed in connection with an incident last Friday in which a car driven by an elderly woman crashed through a brick wall at the Colony Brands outlet store.

The incident happened just before 4:55 p.m. Friday at the store at 640 8th Street, said Police Chief Fred Kelley.

Though the car entered the store, smashing a hole in the brick wall and damaging a cooler inside, there were no injuries, he said. Kelley added that it appears that the driver was attempting to brake at the time of the crash and stepped on the wrong pedal.

The driver was Helen Stauffer, 90, of Monroe, police said, adding that no citations had been issued.

Since the crash happened on private property, the department is fairly limited in the number of charges it can bring, he said.

“Age is not something we would pursue” as a cause of the crash, he said.

The popular business was closed over the weekend following the crash.
