MONROE - Starry, starry chair?

It may not be what Vincent van Gogh had in mind, but eighth-graders at Monroe Middle School have created some eye-catching works of art on discarded chairs.

Students painted scenes based on works by famous artists, such as van Gogh, Andy Warhol and Georgia O'Keefe, on molded plastic chairs that were scheduled to be thrown out. The chairs have been put up for silent auction for school staff to bid on. Proceeds will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Students of art teachers Jamie Prahl and Kris Preboske worked in teams to paint 24 chairs. Using acrylic pains covered in polyurethane, it took them about three weeks to complete the project.

Preboske came up with the idea after seeing the chairs stacked up, ready to be discarded. A similar chair she created years ago sits in her classroom and draws admiration from her students, so she decided to try having students recreate famous works and recycle the chairs at the same time. "It's the 'green' theory," she said.

The students were enthusiastic about the project and have been encouraging their teachers to bid on the chairs they created.

"They're very proud," Preboske said, adding students want the teachers to do the project again next year.

"Next year we might make it more," she said.
