MONROE - Construction on a $1.3 million city project to improve water, wastewater and streets in the Lakeside Heights subdivision, southeast of Recreation Park, is expected to begin in April.

The city Board of Public Works granted approval Monday for Water and Wastewater director George Thompson to begin advertising for bids as early as this week.

According to Thompson, bids will be opened March 1, in time for the board to award the projects March 5, followed by Common Council approval.

The project includes three parts: replacing water main, storm sewer and sanitary; street improvements; and replacing the sanitary lift station. Each part will be bid separately.

Construction is estimated to last about four months.

The project area encompasses all of Lake Drive; the east-west portion of Country Lane; 17th Street between Lake Drive and 22 1/2 Avenue; all of 22 1/2 Avenue; and 16th Street between 22 1/2 Avenue and 23rd Avenue.

The water and wastewater portions of the project will be paid from the utilities' funds. The costs for the street and storm water portions of the project are included in the city's proposed 2012 budget.

The initial scope of the project was to replace an aged lift station and force water main, dating to about mid-1940s, and patch the street in the area. But the project was expanded in 2011 and delayed until 2012 because of a number of problems, including an increasing number of water main breaks in the area.
