MONROE - The Monroe Noon and Morning Optimists Clubs set a high goal for helping children with cancer.

Their Childhood Cancer Campaign Fund Raiser this year comes with the hopes of raising $10,000 to provide care for children with cancer and to find a cure.

"That is a lot, but we're optimists," said Maren Nelson of the Noon Optimists Club.

The event takes place from 6-9 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the Monroe Arts Center, with canapés, chocolate and Champaign being served.

The fundraiser includes a large silent auction. Nelson said 150 letters have been sent out requesting items for the auction. So far they have received 45 donations, but 100 businesses are just now starting to respond.

Suellyn Woodall, the regional representative for Optimists, will be on hand with items to purchase or to make, which will go to a child with cancer in the Milwaukee or Madison areas.

Attendees at the fundraiser can make a card or purchase a "Courage Book." Courage Books are given to a children to record their journey through cancer treatment.

The fundraiser has a limited number of tickets for sale. Already 200 of the 300 available tickets have been sold.

Sheri Novak will be providing the background music.

Nelson said the canapés are being prepared by the Noon Optimists members so that all profits go to benefit the campaign.

"About 15 members are making 10 different canapés, 300 of each," she said.

Robbin Kuester from Swiss Colony Occasions is providing dark chocolate, white chocolate, caramel and cheese fondue.

"This is an event where you can come for 15 to 20 minutes, or spend the whole three hours. People can almost have a meal there," Nelson said.

Semi-formal dress is encouraged, but those in blue jeans won't be turned away.

"I know someone is going to be wearing a tux, just because he hasn't had a chance to wear it anywhere else," Nelson said.

Tickets are $25 for a couple or $15 for singles. Tickets are available at the Wisconsin Community Bank, or by contacting George Breadon at 328-4817 or Nelson at 325-3248.
