Katie McGuire, Monroe, talks about her best friends Cummings, an 11-year-old husky, Daisy, a 2-year-old black cat, and Belle, a 2-year-old brown tabby and white cat.

Cummings came from a litter of puppies from McGuire’s previous husky Fire, who passed away in July. He was originally adopted by a friend, but then McGuire took him back when her friend couldn’t keep him anymore.

Daisy was found born in a piece of equipment on her farm and eventually came to live inside with McGuire and her husband Tom. After about two months, McGuire brought home Belle after getting her from someone she knew at the Monroe Veterinary Service, where she works.

“It was chaos for about a month,” McGuire said. “After that they were best friends.”

Best Friends is a weekly feature designed to highlight a local resident and his or her pets. To suggest someone for the series, contact Marissa Weiher, photographer, at photo@themonroetimes.com.

Describe the personalities of Cummings, Daisy and Belle.

Cummings is very calm. He’s passionate and love people, not so much other dogs. He’s just loveable. He’s a big baby and spoiled rotten.

Daisy is loveable but very needy. She has to drink out of the sink because she refuses to drink out of the dog dish.

Belle’s a diva. She’s a needy one too. As soon as you stop petting her she’s gone because that’s not on her list.

What do you like to do together?

Tom and Cummings have to go to Culver’s every Sunday and he gets his puppy cup.

With the cats, we love to play with the laser. They go flying all over the place. Cummings comes to work with me. He doesn’t like to be alone, especially since his mom passed away.

What’s it been like having Cummings, Daisy and Belle in your life?

It’s been a lot of joy for me. I’m so happy to come home to them every day. They’re a lot of company for me when Tom is farming. I always feel love and happiness as soon as I open the door. I’ll always have pets — I can’t live without them.
