UW-Extension offers pesticide certification in February

MONROE - All farmers and their employees who load, mix, handle or apply "restricted-use" pesticides must complete a pesticide applicator training course and pass a written exam every five years. There is a $30 fee for materials per private applicator. Applicators receive a training manual and study guide to help them prepare for the training session and evaluation.

An exam must be taken after completing the classroom session or after a self-study course at home. Successful completion (50 percent if attending the class; 70 percent independent study) of either will satisfy the requirement for certification or re-certification. Those farmers with certifications that have expired before the 2008 cropping season should have received a letter from the Department of Agriculture in late November or early December.

Two training sessions and one test-only session will be held for Green County farmers in 2008. All of the sessions will be held in the Auditorium of the Government Services Building, Monroe. The dates and times for 2008 are as follows:

• Split Day Session, must score 50 percent or higher on exam - 12:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Feb. 7 and Feb. 8;

• One Day Session, must score 50 percent or higher on exam - 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20;

• Test Only Session, must score 70 percent or higher on exam - 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 5.

Pre-registration is required prior to the session to review the training materials. Pre-register by paying the fees and receive training materials at the Green County UW-Extension Office, Monroe. For more information, contact the UW-Extension Office at (608) 328-9440.
