The Monroe Theatre Guild is helping out the Green County Humane Societys PAWS ON PARADE by helping walk dogs and providing a few extra special characters in the special parade entry. Pictured keeping some hungry dachshunds away from Monroes Sesquicentennial birthday cake are, from right, Katie Miller, Suzanne Miller and Olivia O'Dea. MONROE - It's a dog-eat-dog (or rather a dog-eat-birthday cake) world as a bevy of local dachshunds prepare to celebrate Monroe's Sesquicentennial by making a grand march in the Swiss Colony Cheese Days Parade this September.

And what a sight they'll be! More than 150 dogs and their human companions, including a whole squadron of marching dachshunds, are expected to take part in the PAWS ON PARADE entry sponsored by the Green County Humane Society during the popular Swiss Colony Cheese Days parade Sunday, Sept. 21. GCHS hopes to have at least 150 dogs in honor of Monroe's Sesquicentennial this year.

But the icing on the cake will be the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club's Famous Racing Sausages (TM). The fun-loving giant sausages, always a crowd favorite with Miller Park fans, will be leading the PAWS ON PARADE entry.

Dogs of all breeds, sizes and shapes are invited to join the fun. They can participate in one of four special divisions:

• Dogs currently being sheltered at the GCHS animal shelter. People who don't have a dog may volunteer to walk a shelter dog.

• Alumni dogs that have been adopted through the GCHS

• Marching dachshunds

• Support dogs (dogs from the community marching in support of the GCHS mission)

Make arrangements now to put your PAWS ON PARADE. Reserve a spot in the parade by contacting GCHS Shelter Director Tonya Kelly at 325-9600 or emailing friends@greencountyhumane.org. Participants need to submit their name, phone number and email or mailing address along with dog's name, breed and division (alumni dog, dachshund, support dog). Please specify if the walker is a minor; children 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

GCHS operates a no-kill animal shelter at 1500 6 1/2 Ave. in Monroe. Hours of operation are from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. It is closed Monday, Wednesday and holidays.
