DODGEVILLE - Senior Corps Week will be observed Monday through Friday and will recognize the more than 28,400 Foster Grandparents Program volunteers across the nation. "Making a Difference for Generations" will be the theme.

The Southwest Community Action Program Foster Grandparent Program will highlight the service of 25 FGP volunteers who served more than 22,000 hours during 2013 at 17 host stations.

FGP was created by Congress in 1965 and reauthorized in 2009 under the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The FGP is part of Senior Corps, a division of the national volunteer service network of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which aims to improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement.

Southwestern Wisconsin CAP sponsors the Foster Grandparents Program, which encourages local individuals to get involved in sharing their experiences to make a difference in their communities.

FGP is a volunteer program that assists in placing adults who meet age, income and program guidelines as volunteers at approved host stations, usually a school or not-for-profit day care agency in the counties of Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Richland and southern Crawford. Foster Grandparents volunteer under the direction of a classroom teacher or site supervisor to provide supportive activities such as listening to a child read, assisting with worksheets, spelling or math skills while being a good role model.
