MONTICELLO - On April 28, qualifying Monticello FFA members earned the opportunity to travel to University of Wisconsin-Madison and compete in their respective career development event.
CDEs are competitive contests offered to FFA members as a way to evaluate their skills in various agricultural areas. FFA members compete in area contests in order to qualify for the state contest held at UW-Madison, and Monticello members qualified at the UW-Platteville contest in late March.
Reece Rufer, Tyler Disch, Garrett Grossen and Cierra Kruger competed in livestock judging, while Kyle Walters, Karl Schwoerer, Peter Blumer and Nick Blumer competed in milk quality evaluation. The livestock judging team evaluated hogs, beef and sheep on their ability to provide plentiful, quality meat products. The milk quality evaluation team judged various milk and cheese samples based on their taste and texture. Though neither of the teams qualified for the National FFA CDE by ranking first at the state level, Rufer earned 10th place individually in livestock judging.
On May 4, two teams of students from the Monticello FFA competed in the UW-Platteville soils judging contest. Team A consisted of Miah Brokopp, Sarah Blumer, Alexis Graber and Lindsey Pence, and Team B consisted of Nick Busch, Schwoerer and Walters. The teams earned first and second place respectively. Four members placed in the top 10 individually out of 91 total competitors. Those members are Brokopp (first place), Sarah Blumer (fourth place), Busch (fifth place) and Pence (ninth place).
The soils judging teams will be competing all summer in preparation for the State FFA Soils Judging Contest July 11 in Algoma at the Wisconsin Farm Technology Days.
