MONROE - For the first time, Monroe Public Library is offering to waive fines in exchange for originally packaged and unopened food items during the library's "Food for Fines" days Dec. 11-13. All food items for which fines are waived will be donated to the Green County Interchurch Food Pantry or to the Green County Humane Shelter.
The rate of exchange is one unopened human or pet food item for $1 in fines for Monroe Public Library overdue materials. The exchange of food for fines applies only to overdue items from the Monroe Public Library collection. Fines for lost or damaged items and materials belonging to other libraries are excluded for purposes of the exchange.
"We are looking forward to waiving patron fines and to passing on food items for the benefit of others in our community," Library Director Barbara Brewer said.
Hours to exchange food for fines are 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12; and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Patrons bringing food to exchange for fine waivers should bring items to the Circulation Desk.
