Monroe: Grave decorating groups for Memorial Day announced

MONROE - The veterans' Monroe Memorial Day program includes decorating soldiers' graves, a parade and a ceremony.

Veterans will begin the celebration at 6 a.m. Monday, May 26 by raising the flags on the "Avenue of Flags." Volunteers will then decorate graves at 7 a.m. before heading to the Veterans of Foreign Wars post for coffee and doughnuts.

All squad leaders should report to Tom Casey and Newt Neuenschwander at the big monument to assist people in finding their places. Grave decorating groups are:

Squad 1: Tom Casey, Elva Hermanson, Ernie Steinmann, Boy Scouts of America Troop 101, Girl Scouts of America Troop 213;

All scouts and junior auxiliary will be assigned squads at 6:45 a.m. Monday - Memorial Day. Boy Scouts meet with Jim Connors and the Girl Scouts meet with Monda Hess at the memorial monument.

The parade units will assemble at 8:30 a.m. at Recreation Park. The parade, starting at 9 a.m., travels from the park to the cemetery. A ceremony follows in the cemetery at 9:30 a.m. with introductions by Chuck Drnek, American Legion Commander. The Rev. Pat Soddy of the United Methodist Church of Albany will give the invocation and benediction. Melissa Rufer will give Logan's Orders and Michael Demianiuk will recite the Gettysburg Address. Musical selections will be by the Monroe High School Band, directed by Tom Schilt. George Wells will give the Memorial Day Address; roll call of deceased veterans of Green County by Cad Plenge. The order for placing wreaths on Veterans Memorial is: Daisy, Brownie and Girl Scouts; Cadet and Senior Scouts; Cub and Boy Scouts; American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Princess Tayton Kuebli and the Junior Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 84; Sons of the American Legion Post 84 and Advisor Ernie Gebhartdt Jr.; American Legion Auxiliary Unit 84 President Donna Douglas and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Unit 2312 President Bev Stuckey; American Legion Post 84 Commander Chuck Drnek and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2312 Commander John Daehlin. Firing squad by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2312; and Taps by Monroe High School band. Everyone is invited to a potluck meal at the American Legion Post Home at noon. The "Avenue of Flags" will be taken down at 2 p.m. and volunteers will be appreciated.
