MHS grads Arnold, Hill receive Citizenship Awards

MONROE - Two Monroe High School Class of 2009 graduates, Reuben Arnold and Melissa Hill, received Citizenship Awards.

The Citizenship Award, given since 1928, is based upon scholarship, character, leadership, and cooperation. The selection committee is made up of faculty, administration and community members.

Reuben Arnold is the son of Drs. Rachel Long and Martin Arnold. He has been a member of forensics for four years; science club, three years; Eco-Action Team, founding member, one year; National Honor Society, two years (NHS House Leader, one year); and school play, three years.

Musically, he has been involved in: Concert Band, one year; Wind Ensemble, three years; Jazz Ensemble, four years (Jazz Council member one year); Pep Band, three years; Pit Orchestra, two years; Chorale, one year; Acappella Choir, three years; Madrigal Singers, four years; Barbershop, one year (group leader and founding member); Musical, four years.

Reuben is involved in many extracurricular/leadership activities that include: Wyalusing Camp Counselor, two years; Badger Boys State; Venture Crew 1812, three years; Bel Canto Community Choir, four years; piano, four years; Intern with the Obama Campaign, one year.

His future plans include attending University of Chicago or Reed College with an emphasis in politics and foreign service.

Melissa Hill is the daughter of Jeffrey and Kelly Hill. She has been a member of National Honor Society, two years (NHS House Head, one year); senior class secretary, class vice-president, two years; Student Senate, three years (president, one year); prom court and prom queen; Theatre Crew, one year; ReVue, three years; MHS blood drive, three years.

Athletically, she has been a member of the HS Archery League, two years; Adult Team Archery League, one year; soccer, two years; Rebels soccer, two years; tennis, four years (WIAA State Tennis qualifier, one year).

Musically, Melissa involved in Concert Band, two years; Wind Ensemble, two years; Marching Band, one year; Pep Band, four years; Graduation Honors Band, three years.

Community volunteering includes: Carnival for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, one year; Halloween Kids Festival, two years; Greeter for Winter Holiday parade, one year; Brat Fest, four years; Youth Archery helper, two years; St. Patrick's Day Parade, one year; After School Program, one year; Fourth of July Carnival, four years; Disney Days at the Pool, four years; City Easter Egg Hunt, four years; Net n' Ten Youth Basketball Tournament, four years.

Her future plans include attending University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, majoring in microbiology with intent to work with the government.
