Monroe Public Library to expand story stroll idea for the holidays
story stroll
Photo supplied Christian Wilson, age 10, and Brooklyn Wilson, age 9, follow the Monroe Public Library’s story stroll in December at the Garden Deli on the Square.

Walk around the square, find the hidden bears, and read “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury.

The Monroe Public Library has again partnered with Main Street Monroe to create a story stroll by separating a children’s book into different sections. This free and outdoor activity became a big hit with families last summer and again during the holidays with the book Mr. Cookie Baker. As a result, the staff at Monroe Public Library decided to continue it for the spring season.

The idea came from Andrea Schmitz, Youth Services Coordinator. Laura Schmiedicke, who is in charge of adult services, brought the idea to Main Street Monroe’s Events & Promotions Committee. A range of shop owners were very receptive to being a stop for the stroll. Businesses participating include Pancho & Lefty’s on the east side of the square, Busy Bee Floral & Gift on the north, and Toy Haus on the west side.

The story will be told on 11x17 story boards. This particular story has double spread illustrations. Additional businesses will be participating as library staff “hid” bears also on paper for window postings on and off the square. The story stroll will be posted through the end of the month.

Main Street’s executive director, Jordan Nordby, highlighted how create the library has been throughout the pandemic with its planning and was thankful to give people another reason to safely explore the district as the weather gets warmer. “We are all about family fun activities and we’re proud to have another reason to showcase our businesses,” he stated.

The Monroe Public Library is currently open for curbside pickup. Main Street Monroe is working on announcing plans for the summer season.
