HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Shad Hanson, Juda, and Jonathon Steiner, Monroe, were among the 16 Wisconsin 4-H youth in grades 10 through 12 that spent the last week of January as members of the Wisconsin 4-H Advanced Space Academy. The Academy is one of many programs offered through Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, NASA's official Visitor Information Center for Marshall Space Flight Center.
Hanson, 17, is a member of the Next Generation 4-H club and Steiner, 17, is a member of the Clarno 4-H Club.
The week-long educational program promotes science, technology, engineering and math, while training students with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and decision-making.
The youth were chaperoned by Monroe County 4-H agent Joshua Goede and Space Camp enthusiast and 4-H volunteer Whitney Rathke of Dodge County.
Students sleep in quarters with space-themed decor and train in simulators like those used by NASA. More than 600,000 trainees have graduated from Space Camp since its opening in Huntsville in 1982.
