DARLINGTON — The Lafayette County Historical and Geneaology Society concluded their Thursday, Jan. 25 afternoon meeting with a special tribute to Marion Howard for 50 years of volunteer service to their organization.
Howard, whose community service has spanned far beyond the Society, was surprised at the recognition. A large, clear plaque was presented by LCHGS President Ray Scott, with Dennis “Jack” Shannon giving the declaration as Scott presented Howard with her award.
“Thanks for keeping our Lafayette county history dear to your heart!! We will always appreciate what you do!” Scott wrote on social media.
“We are so lucky to have Marion,” Museum Manager Barb Nemec said.
Others on the board agreed with kind words, applause, and stood in ovation in recognition of Howard’s service to the community.
“Marion is a true treasure to Lafayette County,” Shannon said.
Howard was described as carrying herself with class, dignity, all while giving the best banter. Howard carried the society through adversities, knowing just what to say in every situation. As she continues to volunteer for the society, the society stands in applause, recognizing her for her contributions that have moved it forward.
Howard said in a statement recently that the current group was one of the most ambitious that she has had the pleasure of working with.
