DARLINGTON - Each November, the Lafayette County Health Department Home Care Program joins the Home Care Community to celebrate National Home Care Month. The mission of the Home Care program is to provide high-quality, compassionate and comprehensive in-home care to county residents.

Home Care allows patients to receive vital health and social services in their first-choice setting - their home. In their home, patients are most comfortable and experience the greatest sense of security, stability and belonging which often contributes to a quicker recovery. Home Care enables patients to shorten their stay in medical facilities by providing post-acute care that would otherwise occur in the hospital.

Lafayette County's Home Care Agency was founded in 1973 with the mission of providing comprehensive in-home health and supportive services for Lafayette County's disabled and chronically ill patients. The Home Care team offers services ranging from basic personal needs and assistance with daily living to nursing and therapy intervention and advanced medical treatment. In 2009, Home Care nurses served 138 patients for skilled- nursing services and 59 patients for personal care, such as baths. In one year, the agency conducted a total of 3,769 visits to Lafayette County residents.

As part of National Home Care Month, it also reserves special recognition for Home Care Aide Week Nov.16 to 20. The agency thanked Rebecca Steffes, Sonja Wiegel, Marian Olson, Danielle Steger, Dawn Wiegel, Teresa Robelia, Erin Hastert, and Lisa Wolfe for their continued dedication to providing in-home assistance.

Clerical billing staff is an integral part of the program, in bringing in the revenue from the various payers, transmitting required information, and checking for completion of various requirements. Of the 3,769 total visits made in 2009, 2,416 were RN visits and 1,353 were CNA visits. Physical Therapy visits - mainly for strengthening and gait training - numbered 217. One speech therapy visits for swallow evaluations in the home occurred. The Occupational Therapist made 62 visits to assist patients with upper body strength and adapting activities of daily living.

These staff include: Janice Ruf in billing; physical therapists Sue Burke, Marcy Christensen, Jodi Christopher, Stephanie Jackson, and Katie Larson; speech therapist Michael Parks; and occupational therapists Barb Ritchie and Joanna Schindler. In addition, Janice Ruf and public health technician Colleen Leinberger hold the CNA credential to help in a pinch with patient care.

The home care program has a mixture of experienced and newer employees. We want to recognize staff with more than 15 years of service: Janice Ruf, Colleen Leinberger, Sonja Wiegel, Teresa Robelia, Michael Parks, and Sue Burke.
