DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Historical Society will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Water St. Pub and Eatery in Shullsburg, for a luncheon and brief meeting.
Their specialty, pasty and coleslaw, will be served for $8 or order from the menu. Call 776-8340 for luncheon reservations or if you need a ride.
At 1:15 p.m., historical society members and members of the public will visit the newly renovated St. Augustine Church, New Diggings. For a suggested donation of $5 to continue work on the site, George Burns will give a guided tour of the church and grounds. He will explain the labor-intensive work that has been done to restore both the interior and exterior of the building. The church was built in the mid 1840s when the village was one of the bustling centers of the lead-mining industry in the upper Mississippi Valley.
