GCGS meeting, Fun Day coming soon
Community Brief

MONROE — The Green County Genealogical Society (GCGS) will hold its regular meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 in the second floor meeting room in the Monroe Public Library.

Jean Lythgoe will give a presentation on Ellis Island, including a brief history and the immigration process.

On Friday, Sept. 13, GCGS will host its Friday Fun Day event from 1-3 p.m. in the lower level of the library.

Debra Bailey Trail will give a presentation on researching churches and postcards.

Trail started researching Monroe churches using the eight churches listed in the 1935 Monroe Directory. She uses the information to write articles for the Green County Genealogical Society’s newsletter and to help others with their research. She has found information for her own family by looking at church records in other areas.

Trail collects postcards from where her ancestors lived. Looking at old postcards and current ones make the location come alive for her.

Trail grew up in Rockford. After college, she became interested in her family tree.

Her paternal mother’s side, the Eliakim Allen family, settled in Green County as pioneers. Her great-great grandfather served as sheriff.

Trail met Donna Kjendlie via the internet and became a charter member of the GCGS.

Even though she lives in Washington state, Trail is the newsletter editor and remains active in the society.

For any questions about the meeting or presentation, call Donna at 608-921-1537.

The GCGS Research Center is located in the lower level of the Monroe Public Library and is open to the public for research Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other times are available by appointment by calling 608-328-7436.
