DARLINGTON - The spring meeting of the Lafayette County Bluebird Society will be from 2 to 5 p.m. April 2 in the community room of the Town Bank, 15815 Wisconsin 81, Darlington.

Ryan Schmitz will speak on "Getting to Know the Bald Eagle, Our National Bird." The bald eagle has made a comeback in Lafayette County with several active nests existing now.

Schmitz is a lecturer in the biology department at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He also is a seasonal technician at Eagle Valley Nature Preserve, where he has worked for 13 years. Schmitz earned his Master of Science in biology from Fort Hays State University, with his thesis "Spatial and temporal patterns of bald eagle winter habitat use along the Upper Mississippi River corridor." Aside from raptors, he has studied mountain and snowy plovers, greater sage-grouse and prothonotary warblers. He and his students on the Platteville campus currently are investigating the drivers of bird-window collisions.

Following Schmitz's talk will be a silent auction with many items donated by local Darlington businesses.

The event is free and open to all ages.
