Baby carriers on display

MONTICELLO - A collection of Guizhou Province baby carriers is currently on display at the Dining Room, 209 N. Main St., Monticello.

The baby carriers, which are part of Mary Ann Fitzgerald's collection, are items that mothers in China personalize for both their child and themselves. "Baby carriers are one of the first items a new bride might embroider," Fitzgerald said. "Great time and love goes into making baby carriers and hats that act as talismans to protect the child and ward off evil. Embroidered symbols express promises for good health and fortune, while bells and pom-poms ward off evil."

Fitzgerald's collection reveals a look at the styles different village mothers bring to their hopes for their children, and it is Fitzgerald's collection of love.

The exhibit at the Dining Room also includes a child's ceremonial costume and intricately created hats.

Fitzgerald's exhibit will be available for viewing Wednesday through Saturday nights, from 5 to 9:30 p.m., at The Dining Room until June 17. For the complete artist statement and more information about the exhibit, visit www.209main.com.
